Rescued Foxes Won’t Leave Their Savior's Side

Rescued Foxes Won’t Leave Their Savior's Side

Homer’s Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.  And some of them come from as far away as County Kilkenny in Ireland.

Patsy Gibbons found two abandoned fox pups and, while most people would simply have done nothing, devoted himself to nursing them back to health.  Grainne and Minnie, as the pups were eventually named, made a full recovery—but, rather than returning to the wild, in loyal canine fashion chose to remain with their human savior instead.

Beloved by local children, Gibbons, Grainne and Minnie have been on the receiving end of many invitations to speak in local schools.  Gibbons often makes such appearances, welcoming the opportunity to give students some hands-on exposure to the importance of humane treatment of wildlife.

"I now have people from all over the country and indeed the UK asking me for advice on looking after foxes," Gibbons told the Irish Examiner.  "I'm no expert and I'm still learning from them day-to-day (but) I'm happy to advise as a lay person." (h/t:designyoutrust,irishexaminer)

Ricky Gervais Speaks Out Against Declawing

Ricky Gervais Speaks Out Against Declawing

Ricky Gervais may very well be our favorite British import.  The acid-tongued comedian and lifelong ailurophile took to the web yesterday, in conjunction with the Paw Project, with one simple message: Paws need claws.

He was speaking out against cat declawing—long considered barbaric in animal-rescue circles and an inhumane alternative to behavior modification therapies as a method of keeping cats from clawing up favored furniture.  “Declawing” is a bit of a misnomer, as the procedure removes not just the claw but also the entire top portion of the cat’s toe bone.  Declawing has been linked with serious complications including chronic pain and a lifelong inability for the affected cat to use the litter-box (because walking on litter becomes too painful).

"How could anyone in their right mind declaw a cat or a kitten?" Gervais asks. "I could never imagine committing such an injustice to my beautiful moggy, however many stair carpets or sofas she likes to ruin. New York is one of the greatest most progressive places in the world and I hope to see it at the forefront of the humane treatment of all animals."

The New York State legislature is considering a measure that would ban the practice of declawing state-wide—something Gervais and his beloved moggy, Ollie, are in favor of.

"Declawing stinks!"
