TOUR DATE CHANGES--and an Update on Homer

I've made just about 15 stops thus far on the LOVE SAVES THE DAY National Book Tour of No-Kill Shelters.  In a moment of calmness over the next couple of weeks, I'll write about the stops and the shelters in more detail.  For now, though, I'll say that it's been AMAZING--not just to meet so many kitties this summer, but also to meet the incredible humans who run these shelters and rescue groups, and do such wonderful, generous things for their communities.  And, of course, to finally meet so many of my readers in person!  (Check out the tour's Pinterest page for some photos of the tour stops thus far.)

Which is what makes it so hard to say that the last three dates of the tour--Los Angeles and the Carolinas--are postponed until October/November.  My mother hasn't been well this summer, and I'm headed to Miami.  The new tour dates will coincide with the paperback release of LOVE SAVES THE DAY on October 22nd.  If you haven't already pre-ordered LOVE SAVES THE DAY in paperback, do so now--and hang on to your receipt!  For every paperback copy of LOVE SAVES THE DAY bought or pre-ordered by Sunday, October 27th, I'll be donating $1 to the animal-related charity of your choice.  Stay tuned for details!

I can't even begin to tell you the toll it's taken to be away from Homer this summer.  Truthfully, given what the doctors told me back in December, I didn't expect that Homer would still be around by the time the tour kicked off.  That he is is nothing short of a miracle.  Of course I was terrified to leave him alone every time I got on a plane, but every time I got home, Homer was alive and well and fesity as ever!  He's plumped up the tiniest bit on all the extra "guilt food" Laurence has been spoiling him with while I was away, and it always does my heart good to see Homer with a bit more meat on his bones!

I'm off to do some packing (on top of everything else, Laurence and the kitties and I are moving on Sept. 1--oy!) and give Homer his morning deli turkey.  More to come soon! :D

    These news make my day!

We've all been witnesses to how much you travel and how much you miss Homer, but yeah, now it's time to take care of your lovely kids and husband. Also, it's awesome to know that Homer gained some weight. Considering he's always been on the thin side, it's amazing news :)

sending positive energy to you and your family

Sorry if you receive this 10 times :) Captcha hates me and then my comuter locked up :)

I was super excited to get to see you in Kirkland at Meow Cats Rescue. I hope you were able to see some of the beautiful pacific northwest.

I so glad Homer is doing well. They just never cease to amaze us. I know my kitty Izzy, who was diagnosed with CRF 3 years ago, would never make it year. Now on top of it she has been diagnosed with diabetes and again, I never though she'd come home from the clinic when I took her hin the end of June, but she is still alive and actually doing pretty well. So whateve the doctor's really up to them and when They decided their ready for their next journey. Like you and Homer...every single day I wake up and she is still here and doing one more day of borrowed time. We take what we can get :)

Enjoy your visit with your mom and best of luck in your move.

    God speed, Gwen.

Thanks so much for the update on Homer - he is an amazing little soul as you well know. I'm just one of many who feel like we know you & your family and so we know your heart is heavy with your mother's illness. Wishing you safe travel and prayers for your mother's healing. Laurence seems to do quite well with your children in your absence. What a good guy he must be.

  • Jane Winegardner Sunday, 04 August 2013

Gwen--you inspire me so much. I'm volunteering with the kitties in our town's animal shelter. They are a joy, and I'm glad to bring a little happiness to them. Good luck with your busy life, and prayers for your mom and Homer! I'm sure you realize that every day with him is a gift--cheers.

    Thank you for this update

Gwen, I hope your mother is feeling better soon. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate with everything and then moving! Give Homer a great big hug and kiss for us.

  • Bonnie Young Sunday, 04 August 2013

    Thanks for the Updates

So glad Homer is doing good and gaining some weight, even if it is just a little. Hope your Mom is doing better and that you have a safe trip. Hope you all enjoy your new home where ever it is, NYC or back near Mom. Sure hope Homer has many many more Birthdays. I love all my cats but I took my most favorite Siamese, Oreo at 16 to be put down cause she was so sick, crying all the way to the vet. But thanks to our Vet at the time, prayer, my Sister, my Daughter and I working with her around the clock, she made it through that ordeal and lasted over three more years. So I guess some of them really do have nine lives. Thanks for all the time you have spend helping the No-Kill Shelters and if you ever do another tour of this nature, my Sister works for one here in Roanoke, Virginia that would sure Love to see you. Kiss Homer for me and take care.

    All your news

Gwen Homer Laurence and "the babies"
It is such great news that Homer has gained a little weight. His dad has taken good care of him while you were on your book/shelter tours. I'm sure everyone is glad to have you home for a little while. How will your stoic little man deal with another move in life? You haven't mentioned the babies much how are they doing? Can we get some new pictures of all the fuzzes? Wishing a good visit with your mom and a "no crises" move.

    Hi Gwen

Gwen, I hope your mom will feel better and am sure your visit will boost her spirits. Great news about Homer "plumping" up a bit. He is a tough little cookie as you already know. A book tour. a trip to see your mom, keeping up with a blog and FB sites not to mention a dozen other interests AND to top it off, you pick now to move? Whatever brand of vitamins you take, I want some . Are you moving to that big farmhouse I suggested so you can have dozens of cats? LOL Best of luck with everything, love to Homer,Laurence and the twins and wishing good health to your mom.

I was SO DISAPPOINTED to not be able to see you in L.A.! But certainly understand your having to delay due to your mom's health concerns. Eagerly awaiting this fall! And DELIGHTED that Homer is doing so well! What a li'l fighter, and what a purrsonality he has....way to go Big H!

    Such adventures!

I'm glad you'll have a bit of downtime with families, both human and feline. Good luck with the move and I hope Homer does ok in a new, unknown environment, and enjoys learning his new home. Love your tour photos with all the wonderful cats and dogs!

  • Geri Minard Sunday, 04 August 2013

    Best Wishes

Sorry to hear your Mom hasn't been feeling well. I am so glad the tour has been going so good! Yeah for Homer!! Here's to many, many more good days for Homer :)

  • Joni Haggard Sunday, 04 August 2013

What a worry for you, Gwen, to have your Mom be ill enough that you need to go right away to be with her. I can't imagine, on top of this scare, to also have to face the many tasks and stresses that constitute a move. And little Homer has to learn all about a new home again! You are remarkably strong, and you and all your family are in my thoughts.

  • Sheri Reese Sunday, 04 August 2013

Thrilled for Homer, sad about your mom

Gwen, I'm so happy Homer has gotten through this tour and has gained a little weight and is feisty. I have a ten year old cat that I find hard to leave. Vacations are becoming places he can go too. Sorry your mom is not well. I know you will be just what the doctor ordered. Love to you and your but especially the wonderful Homer.

I'm so glad that Homer is doing so well! I hope your mom's health improves. Paws crossed that my human is in town for your L.A. date - she will be at the Cat Writer's Conference in Dallas October 31 - November 3. In any case, if you need any help around your L.A. appearance, do let us know!

    Great meeting you in SF

wen, it was such a treat to meet you and Laurence and listen to your reading and talk at the San Francisco SPCA. I volunteer at Pets Unlimited, another SF animal shelter, and I am now rereading Homer's Odyssey. What an odyssey it has been! I hope that your mother is doing better and that your move goes well. All the best to everyone at home,

    Purring for you & Homer

Gwen: I am thinking of you & Morticia & Selina are purring for dear Homer. I know that "worried" feeling you speak of, getting on the plane & wondering if he'd be there when you got back. Please give him our special NC fan love and I hope that your mother is doing better.
