A Quick Update on the Homer Bear

I haven't written in a few days because, honestly, I wouldn't have had anything good to report.  Homer's been on a bit of a hunger strike, and you all know how frightening and sad that can be.  BUT, I am pleased to report that Homer's eating again! Hooray!

Those of you who've been following us the past couple of weeks know that we've been hiding Homer's meds in his food, as attempting to pill him is a non-starter.  (You're thinking, Pill Pockets, pill shooters, wrap him up in a "kitty burrito"!  Trust me, all these methods have been tried and have failed.)  Even compounding Homer's medicine into a yummy-tasting tuna flavor doesn't do much good, because Homer has always been highly resistant to anything entering his mouth in any fashion other than his choosing to put it there himself--even if it's something that tastes good and that he'd otherwise enjoy.

We did manage to come up with a concoction of Homer's favorite things that we could successfully hide the medicine in, but his stomach became terribly upset.  We tried putting him on a more boring diet, but he wasn't eating at all.  Finally, today, I had the idea of bringing home Kitten Chow, which Homer hasn't had since he was a kitten 14 years ago.  And, I'm thrilled to report, he's eating again!  With enthusiasm!  I guess there's something for all of us in the comfort foods of our childhoods when we're not feeling well.

So he hasn't gotten his meds in a couple of days, but at this point I'm just happy to see him eating.  Later today I'm going to try mixing the yummy-tasting medicine compound with the less-yummy crushed-up antibiotic mixed in with some baby food that's mixed into the bigger bowl of Kitten Chow.  We'll see how that goes.  Honestly, I'm just so happy to see food going in him again that I have tears in my eyes as I'm typing this.  As long as he's eating happily, everything else can be managed.  At least, everything feels pretty manageable around here for the first time in days, and I will accept the goods the gods have given me without going out to look for the downside just yet!  :-)

I don't have the camera phone handy (and I don't want to disturb him by looking for it!), but here's what Homer's doing with me right now...

Hi! I've had issues with my black kitty. It has taken months, but my vet has helped me find something to help when he isn't feeling well and stops eating. My kitty is VERY picky. He is a lot like Homer when it comes to taking medication. Now, I just mix in some "FortiFLora" into some moist cat food. It is made by Purina and you can only get it through a vet. It is a feline nutritional supplement. He helps with tummy troubles and promotes a healthy immune system. It is worth looking into as we were headed for serious trouble, and this saved the day!

Blessings and vibes for you and Homer

I hope that all goes well with you boy and that he continues to eat for you and take his meds. It's so distressing when they're sick and we want so much to help them. Just know that there are many hands and hearts out here holding you up.

    Hi Homer

So sorry to hear that Homer wasn't eating....and so GLAD to hear that he's eating again. We recently acquired a new kitten to go with our two adult cats (ages 4 and 13). I think they eat more kitten chow than the kitten does, while Abby (new kitten) seems to prefer the adult Meow Mix! Go figure.....
In response to the suggetion about a med that will help stimulate his appetite - ask his vet about valium. I have a very good friend who went through a long trying time with a cat that wouldn't eat and her vet prescribed valium (sorry, but I don't know the dosage) and it helped. She had to coax him to eat the food with the valium in it, but once it got into his system, he ate more readily on his own. Maybe that will help?
Sending you lots of wishes and prayers for improved health. Lots of love to you all, and Merry Christmas!

    Love that Kitten food...

My older cat loves the kitten food too. I'm just happy she eats, we go through times of love the food, then not love the food. Venison is her fav now! Wish we could send Homer some venison.

    Keep Eating, Homer!

Homer, you are a strong, brave cat with a lot of love in your heart. Keep on fighting!

    glad to hear!

So glad Homer likes the kitten chow! Does your vet make house calls? I wonder if Homer would do better if he didn't have to have an exam at the office. Just an idea. Keep up the strong spirits!

Hugs and purrs, Rebecca, Twiggy & Noodle.

    Keep it up Homer

Glad that Homer is eating. I also recommend getting the meds so that you just rub it on his ear. The vet will also use a human med to increase his desire for food (something I will never need to take). Hopefully you will find something yummy that he can't resist. Please remember all the prayers and positive thoughts being sent your way. Take care!

    God bless you & Homer

It sounds like Homer has what my beloved Horatio had. Horatio lived several years after an initial diagnosis and held on for the last 18 months to see me through cancer treatments. I miss him every day but recognize that he loved me unconditionally. It was his gift to me. Homer is your gift, and you have shared that gift with the world. God bless you, Gwen. And thank you for Homer.

    Homer

So glad to hear that Homer is eating. I've been worried about him. I have a cat that was sick a year ago and he had hepatic lipidosis and pancreatitis. We almost lost him. The vet had to put in a feeding tube and he finally started eating again. I cried for days. Any way, I hope that Homer will improve. You have wonderful to him. He's a lucky boy to have you! God Bless you and Homer!

    Try this with the meds

    Hello Gwen and Homer,
Sammy, our cat has been sick and the doctor gave him a pill after dipping it in butter. It went down quick and smooth. Sammy also likes the butter and he wanted more. I don't know how Homer feels about butter or margarine. It might help make the meds taste better.

I think Rose is referring to Mirtazapine Transdermal Gel. When rubbed on the inside of the ear flap, it does a great job stimulating a cat's appetite.

I love you Homer and only wish wonderful things for you and your mom in 2013. Gwen keep up the great work, you are doing it all and then some. Have a wonderful holiday!
